She shined radiantly in her long evening gown. The dark blue shimmered in the chandelier light. Her black hair was pulled up and held in place by a sparkling diamond tiara. Joseph Vincenti admired his wife from across the crowded ballroom and lustily recalled last night’s passionate lovemaking.

Some city councilman droned on, extolling the latest highway on-ramp construction downtown or some such dribble. Vincenti didn’t care. All he wanted to do was watch his wife, revel in the closeness they’d shared. Though the pain and sadness of Joe Junior’s passing still sat deep inside them both, they’d finally been able to enjoy each other. He could still feel her soft caresses on his old bones.

Out of the corner of his eye he caught sight of Sean hovering by the door to the hallway. Vincenti gave one last glance at his wife as she moved to another small gathering. She laughed and tossed her head back, no longer acting. She was able to muster through and live her life, their life. Vincenti looked at Sean, who motioned him over.

“What is it?” Vincenti failed to keep the annoyance from his voice.

“I’m sorry to disturb you, sir. Phone call.”

“Who?”

“Caratenuto, sir.” Disgust dripped from Sean’s voice.

“What does he want? Better be to tell me he’s caught the Gorgon.”

“I don’t think so, sir.” Sean stepped aside.

Vincenti snatched the phone receiver from the small table in the hallway.

“What do you want, Mikey? You catch him?”

“Um, well, Uncle, we ah…well, we…”

“Spit it out!”

“We lost the girl.”

Vincenti pushed the phone away from his ear and turned to Sean. “Is there any reason you can think of not to waste this little puke?”

Sean shook his massive head.

“Me either.” Vincenti could hear Caratenuto squawking on the phone, pleading for his life. “How did you lose the girl?”

“Well, she and her mother left their house. Then on the tollway, some jerk had car trouble and, well, they turned off somewheres before we could catch up.”

“Enough! I’m tired of your screw-ups, Mikey. Tell you what, you have one more chance.”

Silence on the other end of the line. Vincenti smiled. He thought about waiting his nephew out, see how long he could hold his breath.

“Get back to the broad’s house. It’s time to step up the pressure,” Vincenti said. “Move to the next level. You get my drift?”

“Yes, sir. I understand.”

“Then do it, you little puke.” Vincenti slammed the phone down.

Before returning to the ballroom, he patted Sean on the shoulder and said, “It’s only a matter of time, now, my friend. Soon, we’ll have the Gorgon. Then he’ll be all yours.”

Without even looking, Vincenti could feel the wicked smile spread on Sean’s face.
